The Santa Cruz Vala is a brand new full power e-bike with a fresh approach to trail riding. At first glance, it might seem like quite the departure from the tried-and-true VPP suspension the brand is known for, but Santa Cruz is committed to making bikes that ride well, not just bikes with VPP. Equipped with the latest Bosch Performance Line CX powertrain, the Vala’s 4-bar linkage design is perfectly suited to deliver a ripping trail bike with a low center of mass and exceptional suspension performance. Read on for our full first ride review, and don't forget to check out the video below!

Technical Details

The first thing to catch my eye was the departure from a VPP suspension design to a 4-Bar driven linkage. If it wasn’t for the ‘Santa Cruz’ painted on the downtube, you might not recognize this as a bike from the California brand. Although different, this design has been carefully engineered to deliver Santa Cruz's best kinematics and handling while playing nice with the motor layout.

The new Bosch Performance Line CX motor is nicely packaged in the Vala’s low-profile frame and a first for Santa Cruz. The motor delivers up to 85 nm of torque with a peak power of 600 watts, and is paired with a fully enclosed 600wh battery. There are some simple buttons to control the power output, and it does not distract you with an unecessary screen. The battery is stored internally and is not removable, which gives the bike a nice and tidy aesthetic without latches and other bits required for a removable system. Overall, the Vala looks sleek and ready to tackle any adventure.

A mixed wheel setup give you the rolling capabilities of a 29” front wheel and the nimble turning characteristics of a 27.5" rear wheel, which lends itself to some fun descending and confident climbing, while a nicely specced 160mm fork and 150mm shock means it can handle some big hits. A geo chip for bottom bracket height and headtube angle along with a separate shock Progression chip mean the Vala can be easily tuned to fit your preferred terrain or riding style. Last but not least, the Bosch motor leaves a little more seat tube real estate than usual for a Santa Cruz bike, which means longer seat posts can be fitted from the factory.

Construction quality is everything you expect from Santa Cruz: a robust build with easy to service bearings, a one-piece bridged link to add stiffness to the chassis and protect the shock, an enclosed downtube that minimizes rattling, and one of the best warranties in the game to back it all up.

Ride Impressions

Climbing / Uphill

To find out how the Vala shreds the downhill, first I had to get some climbing done. The Bosch Performance Line CX motor fitted to the Vala has lots of power, but power is of no use if you can't deliver it to the wheels and maintain control, so it was awesome to see how it handled varied climbing terrain and laid down power efficiently with little to no delay.

The motor is incredibly quiet, only emitting a light whine compared to other e-bikes on the market. There are four different e-bike modes to choose from: Eco, Tour, eMTB and Turbo. I found myself using tour mode most frequently on consistent mellow terrain as the power was enough to keep up a good pace, but not so much like I was flying up without any effort. Turbo mode is great for zipping up climbs without much effort since you access the full 600w peak power figure and all 85 nm of torque, however this can drain the battery charge pretty quickly if it's the only mode you use. This is why I preferred using eMTB mode when I came across any steep technical bits of trail. Like Turbo, you get a powerful assist to tackle the steep sections, but with a much more precise and sensitive feel. One of my main issues with using a Boost or Turbo mode is that you often find yourself spinning up the rear tire because too much power is being delivered, but eMTB mode mitigates this for a smoother, more natural ride. This makes for a much more intuitive feel when attacking technical sections, and I found myself climbing sketchy stuff without a whole lot of trouble.

By opting for a 4-bar suspension design, Santa Cruz is able to achieve a lower center of gravity and optimize how the bike performs whilst pedaling. I found the Vala to be an efficient climber that didn’t bob through its travel much when pedaling, yet still felt plush and comfortable over rough rocks and roots. A bonus to this design is that it allows for deeper seat tube insertion, so getting the saddle height just right was super quick and easy. Equipping the Vala with mixed wheels was also an inspired choice – the 29" front wheel is massively capable of rolling over all sorts of obstacles, while the smaller 27.5" rear wheel makes it a breeze to negotiate tight terrain.

Descending / Downhill

After a successful climb, I was excited to slam my dropper and hop into some fresh hero dirt to see how she fared on the way down. Before dropping in, I lowered my fork pressure by a few psi and kept the progression chips in their HI positioning.

The Vala is an absolute menace on the descents and is capable of taking on anything. The bike felt well suspended and took some good hits without bottoming out, which gives you the confidence to just trust the bike and focus on the trail. For my first run, I was surprised how little I noticed the bike under me, especially given that I had never ridden it before. I immediately felt at home on it. Fast downhill sections felt stable with the rear end planted and lacking any sort of unwanted flex in the suspension linkage, while tighter, slower sections of trail were complimented by the bike's agility and maneuverability.

With the weight of the motor and battery low in the chassis, the Vala demonstrates insane grip on slabs, in corners, and under heavy braking. The mixed wheel setup really shines on the descent since the smaller rear wheel allows the bike to lean hard into corners, giving the Vala a nimble and playful feel. I did not have any issues with bottom-bracket clearance on rock rolls, and the headtube angle was perfect for steeps.

The Vala really does feel like a regular trail bike going down, and is everything you'd expect from a Santa Cruz e-bike. I was genuinely shocked at how quiet this bike was since my personal bike sounds like a shopping cart, and it's not even an e-bike! There was no rattling from the motor or any of the moving parts inside, no matter how rough the trail got. The decision to go with an integrated, non-removable battery definitely helps, with no latches or quick releases to worry about. All in all, Vala is supremely well-equipped to take on any gnarly descent!

Suspension and Geo Adjustments

One of the best things about the Vala is the various adjustments you can make to maximize your ride. These include Progression Chips with a ‘Hi’ position designed to prioritize bump forgiveness, or a ‘Lo’ position for a consistent, responsive feel. The Geo Chip, also features a ‘Hi’ and ‘Lo’ setting, with ‘Hi’ raising the Bottom Bracket by 4mm and steepening the headtube by 0.3 degrees. I rode in the stock ‘Hi’ positioning on both adjustments as it felt great right away, and I figured I could probably use the extra height on the BB. This stock setup provides a plush ride with excellent braking performance through rough downhill sections. The bike remained planted at all times. whether I was going up a punchy climb or down a slick rooty section. The rear end just stays glued to the ground.

The adjustments are straightforward and could even be done trailside – all you need is a hex-wrench (which can be mounted to the underside of the top tube). We all have different riding styles and preferences, so this functionality is awesome. The longer seat post allowance adds to the overall comfort of the ride. The size Large I rode for this review comes stock with a 210mm dropper post, which means I can have the saddle slammed to the seat post collar and out of the way, not sticking out because the dropper isn’t tall enough. The Vala also offers a few adjustments to tune the headtube, bottom bracket and shock progression to get the most out of your ride.

Battery Life and Motor

My ride took about 6 hours (with a lot of stop/start) and we covered a good amount of ground. I predominantly used Tour and eMTB mode and still had about 40% battery life left when the day was done. Obviously, I didn’t push the Vala to its limits of the battery capacity, but I found the 600Wh battery to be more than enough for the type of riding that I do. I can see how you might run out of juice if you were going on a massive day out in the boonies, but a range extender of 250Wh is available if needed. I find the Vala to fill a certain gap between super light 430Wh e-bikes and the big, hulking 850Wh rigs. In my experience, light e-bikes can run out of power pretty quickly if you utilize Turbo mode a lot, while bigger 850Wh e-bikes feel like overkill for some rides. The Vala sits right in the sweet spot, giving you a smaller package that packs plenty of punch to take you further for longer.

The Bosch CX Performance system is intuitive to use and easy to switch between modes depending on the terrain you encounter. Eco and Tour mode are great for flatter terrain as you can conserve a bit of battery and cruise along, then eMTB and Turbo are suited for steeper tougher sections. Navigating between the modes requires a simple touch of a button, and a light on the top tube display indicates clearly which mode you are in. I found myself switching from Tour to eMTB frequently yet barely had to think about it or worry whether or not I was in the right mode.

Who Is It For?

The Vala is suited for all-day adventure, evening hot laps, and afternoon trail sessions alike. For a full powered e-bike, this battery size makes sense as it bridges the gap between bikes with too little or too much battery capacity. A lot of riders will find 600Wh to be plenty to suit their everyday riding needs while benefiting from the weight savings. The addition of a 250Wh range extender is enough to give peace of mind for those that need the extra juice on big days. On the trail, Vala is able to dominate the climb with on-demand power delivery and descend with utmost composure and control.

The Bottom Line

My Experience with the Santa Cruz Vala was massively positive. I have never experienced such smooth and responsive power delivery from an e-bike, and it’s a great choice for riders who refuse to compromise on downhill performance. The Vala’s battery size is perfect for a everyday riding, never making you feel overpowered or under-juiced, and the ability to add a range extender quells any doubt about going the distance.

The Bosch Performance Line CX motor’s smooth and responsive power delivery is a highlight, although the one thing I would change is the way the battery life is displayed. There are 6 lights to indicate battery life, while I always prefer a percentage displayed instead. It’s a minor complaint. Having to hand the bike back to Garen from Santa Cruz after the test was difficult, since I would love to keep for a few more rides. This bike is the real deal!

I am a Retail Supervisor and part of evo’s Community Engagement Collective. I grew up in Peterborough Ontario, where my brother and I would build jumps to huck our hardtails. My first bike was a hand-me-down Norco Kathmandu – it wasn't pretty but it got the job done! Nowadays, I ride a Trek Slash and clock 100+ days in the Whistler Bike Park, with a few pedaling days to try and keep my fitness up. My favorite trail in Whistler would have to be Hey Bud on Blackcomb.
