Itinerary
Itinerary
Please note there is no fixed itinerary, and you are free to choose your adventure. Below is a sample itinerary.
  • 1
    Day number 1
Welcome to Oahu! At the Hawaii Surf Campers shop, we’ll provide an orientation to make sure you are familiar with the van and how to take good care of it to ensure you have a smooth trip. Driving to the North Shore (Haleiwa town) on its on is a beautiful short drive, then visit the Northwest coast of Oahu, checking out Kaena Point and Mokuleia Beach Park. We recommend staying at Camp Mokuleia for the night.
  • 2
    Day number 2
Wake up by the beach at Mokuleia, where you could head for a surf if conditions are right. There, you’ll have 2 hiking options. Kaena Point Trail takes about 3 hours and, depending on the time of the year, you can whale watch, check out seals, or baby albatrosses. The second hike, Kealia Trail, is a little shorter (about an hour) and will take you up the mountain from Dillingham Airfield for a cool North Shore view. If you are feeling especially adventurous, skydiving is an option there!

During the afternoon you can check-out Haleiwa town heading towards the north east, visit beautiful and world famous surfing spots like Pipeline, Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay (please note these spots are for experienced surfers only). Options for less experienced surfers that have great waves include Pu'ena Point and Chuns Reef. Heading up the coast you will find Malaekahana Campground, a perfect camping option for your second night.
  • 3
    Day number 3
Find yourself on a "jungly beach" area which is Malaekahana. If you are a kite surfer, congratulations! This is a great wind spot for that sport. If not no worries, you can find no shortage of water activities. Heading back towards Sunset Beach you will find Sunset Pillbox hike for a great view of waves (about 1 hour roundtrip) as well as the famed Kawela Bay.

Drive down the coastline on the east shore of Oahu where the mountain scenery is stunning! Make sure to check Kahana Bay, Lai'e Point with an optional a 20ft cliff jump into the ocean. Makapu'u Beach and Sandy Beach are also must sees. Great for body surfers! If you still want to go for a swim, make sure to check Halona Cove and Waimanalo Beach Park. Spend that night at a sandy beach or for a private campground check-out Bellows Airfield.
  • 4
    Day number 4
For the fourth day drive into Honolulu from the southeast, admiring the rocky mountain scenery along the way. If you want some good exercise, walk up Koko Head Crater! Make sure to do it before noon as it does get pretty hot and intense.

In Honolulu, make sure to visit Waikiki beach and check out Ala Moana Beach Park. Drive back through H1 and H2 freeways (beware of traffic from 3pm on). Reach the North Shore again for your last sunset! Enjoy a dinner in Haleiwa town and set up your check-out for the next day with Hawaii Surf Campers.
  • 5
    Day number 5
Savor your final morning in paradise before returning to Hawaii Surf Campers to return your van. Whether you’re headed home or continuing on in your journey we’re happy to help with advice. Aloha!

Area Information

Hawaii

The 137 islands, islets and shoals that make up the Hawaiian Island chain sit at the northern tip of the Polynesian Triangle, an expanse of ocean roughly the size of Europe and North America combined. As one of the most geographically isolated, continuously populated spots on Earth, Hawaii is a land of many contrasts. Together, the eight main Hawaiian Islands — Hawaii, Maui, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, Kaho’olawe, Lanai and Ni’ihau — are home to virtually every geographic formation, terrain and climate to be found on earth. The possibilities for outdoor enthusiasts are boundless, from lava deserts, to highland rainforests, to the world’s tallest sea cliffs and miles of pristine beaches.

Trip Planning

It’s tough to find a “bad” time to visit Oahu! Average temperatures comfortably sit in the mid-60s to high 80s year-round, but rain showers are less prevalent from mid-June to August (Oahu's summer season), when travelers tend to flock to the island to take advantage of the sunnier weather. Another popular (though more expensive) time to visit is between late December and early April, when surfers head to the North Shore to catch waves or watch professionals compete in various surfing events.During the shoulder seasons from mid-April to early June or between September and mid-December, attractions are less crowded, festivals are plentiful and airfare is at its lowest.

The team walked us through every part of the van, the camping aspects, and were super patient demoing how it all worked. Big enough to sleep comfortably and easy to drive. Really let us enjoy the ability to travel around from site to site without worry about getting back to a hotel on a particular side of the island. We experienced everything we wanted to do and got to camp on the beach sites thanks to this awesome company.
