Story Courtesy of Steven Kimura, Gray Thompson and Pete Sieper, Founders
United Shapes started in 2014. We were advised by many that it was a terrible time to get into the industry, but felt ourselves that the timing was perfect. The kinds of snowboards and brands we loved were long gone, and we weren't personally responding to what had replaced them. We had some fresh concepts and energy that needed to get out there. Steven, Pete, and I (Gray) have all been riding for over 20+ years. We've seen a lot happen in snowboarding over that time. United Shapes is really the end result of being obsessed with snowboarding for the vast majority of our lives.
What is your design philosophy?
United Shapes' clean, no frills, simple designs tip our hats to the past while laying a path to the future. Shapes designed with purpose, function and beauty for supreme enhancement of the snowboarding experience.
Our designs are dictated by clean lines and a timeless aesthetic; balanced by progressive constructions and materials, and stamped by tried and true, solid technologies. We design each board starting with a certain feel in mind to ensure that from the ground up each shape has a story and a purpose.
On other sources of inspiration outside of snowboarding...
We love snowboarding for what it is - it isn't surfing or skateboarding. Snowboarding is such a powerful expression of freedom and movement and embodies its own spirit, soul and identity. There are such deep roots and history in snowboarding that we pull inspiration from, and everyday we spend either in the mountains or at a desk; we are thinking up ways to enhance the rider's experience on snow. There remains endless inspiration to pull from snowboarding as well as the art and design world.
United Shapes is a true labor of love, 100% owned and operated by three good friends who love snowboarding. Thank you, Gray Thompson, Pete Sieper, Steven Kimura.
