The women's Fischer Ranger 115 GW DYN Alpine Touring Boot is a great option for an advanced skier in need of a mid-volume boot. Stiff enough feel on the groomers to carve and then easily transitions with a flip switch on the side of the boot, to a walk mode with a great range of motion. No more do you have to awkwardly reach behind to the back of the boot and bobble back and forth trying to lock back into ski mode, with this boot you lean down to buckle your boots, flip the switch right under the top buckle lean forward, and you’re good to go. The stock cam strap at the top is one of the best on the current market, tightens better than any velcro strap and holds tension throughout the day. Easily customizable with a heat mold of the shell and liner, this boot can be made to fit most any foot. If you have a narrower foot, an aftermarket liner that takes up some volume might be needed but the shell alone has enough pros that it’s worth it to make it work in any way you can.
Shop the Fischer Ranger 115 GW DYN BootsAt 115 stiffness, the Ranger 115W is one of the stiffest women's touring boots on the market and it actually feels that stiff. The 99mm last (mid-volume) is great for fitting a wider range of feet, which I think is warranted, given that a lot of the women’s touring boots on the market are low volume. The entire walk mode locking mechanism is contained within the boot, so there’s not as much concern about the walk mode mechanism getting caught on something and breaking off, or losing said pieces in the snow.
Forefoot Width | 99mm |
Ski Boot Flex | 115 (Stiff) |
Liner Type | Semi-Custom |
Boot Sole Type | GripWalk (ISO 23223), Tech |
Number of Buckles | 4 |
I’d like to note that while I like this boot, it was too large of a volume for me, thus it was hard to actually get the tight controlled feeling I like in a boot. I will be getting some aftermarket liners soon to hopefully take up some of the extra space.
Downhill on Groomers:
While softer than boots I’m used to (Race boots: 130+ flex) this boot held up well as I put it through the paces carving on some groomers. I felt some bounce when in a particularly hard/forceful carve, which means it’s not quite stiff enough for that but given it’s a touring boot, that was to be expected. The stock cam strap is great, though I might still switch over to a Booster strap just to get the elasticity.
Downhill on Powder:
Also skied great, I do like my touring boots to feel a little softer in powder than when I’m skiing on groomers so this was a good happy medium for me.
Uphill/Hiking:
This has a great range of motion for a “hybrid” ski boot. I had great ankle mobility throughout the hike. I really like the different transition mechanisms. Instead of being on the back of the boot with a flip switch on the outside (Atomic XTDs, Tecnica Cochise, K2 Mindbenders), the entire lock mechanism is contained within the back of the boot. The switch you flip is on the side of the boot facing out, just under the top buckle, so while you are buckling up your boots to go back to ski mode (or loosening them to start walking) you just flip the switch and a cable system puts you into whatever mode you need. There’s no concern of snow or ice getting into the mechanism as it’s all within the boot and there’s not as big of a worry of losing some pieces of the switch mechanism if it were to break in a fall.
This boot is not the most friendly for those of us with larger calves that sit lower on our legs but a heat mold can help in most cases, as it did with me.
It’s definitely one of the stiffer womens touring boots on the market at this time, thus an advanced to heavier skier could use these. Designed for someone with a wider foot, or someone with narrower foot willing to get an aftermarket liner to take up some volume. Would be a great one-boot wonder for someone looking for a boot that can rip up the in-resort groomers and then hike up some side or backcountry areas to reach the pow.
Choose this product if you need a stiff boot that actually feels like it and if you have a mid-volume foot and slender calves. If you are annoyed with the flip mechanism that requires you to awkwardly lean back behind you and move back and forth to lock back into ski mode, this it’s a great hybrid boot that has the cable mechanism which makes transitions much easier. Beyond that it’s also a damn good looking boot as well, very sleek looking with its cream color and reddish brown accents
