When and how do I meet up with the group?
For this trip, it is best to fly into Guatemala City, Guatemala. The trip includes two different shuttle times on the arrival and departure days. Please get in touch with us and we can help organize a good time for your arrival and departure with the rest of the group. If you wish to arrive early or stay a few extra days, please let us know and we will arrange for a shuttle for you. The cost is around $30 each way and will be in a vehicle large enough to accommodate a few bike bags
A driver will be at the airport waiting for you when you land in Guatemala City. They will be at the exit of baggage claim/customs and will have a sign with your name on it. If you are traveling with a bike bag, they will be able to easily spot you. If not, make sure to look out for them.

Should I bring my own bike? Do you offer rentals?
For this trip, we highly recommend that you bring your own bike! We have a lot of experience traveling with bikes, so please let us know any questions you might have. Some of the airlines have baggage policies that allow a bike as one of your checked bags. Make sure to check your airline's baggage policy before booking your flight. Rental bikes are very limited in Guatemala, and we do recommend bringing your own bike for this trip. This trip is on technically challenging trails at high elevations, and we highly recommend a full suspension bike. If you have never flown with your bike before, we have created a guide to help you with the process: https://world-ride.com/traveling-internationally-with-your-bike/. Reach out if you have any questions about this!

What are the accommodations like?
While in Guatemala, we will be staying in hotels in Antigua and Lake Atitlan. Our hotel at Lake Atitlan is the Casa del Mundo, a spectacular place right on the water that has a wood fired hot tub- one of our favorites that we will enjoy after a few days of riding!
-
Who will my guides be?
Local, experienced, English-speaking guides. We’d like to spotlight our guide, Christa Castillo, who will be joining the trip. Christa had been curious about mountain biking while working as a volcano hiking guide for Antigua, Guatemala based Old Town Outfitters. After World Ride started their program in Guatemala, she got asked to be the first female mountain bike guide. She immediately fell in love with the bike and now works guiding mountain biking and hiking. She also organizes a weekly group ride of local Guatemalan women with her group Aventurandose con la Christa. Some of the rides now have 25-30 women! She loves the way she can connect with herself and nature through mountain biking. She has also climbed 21 volcanoes throughout Guatemala and loves poetry, reading, jazz, Ayurveda and any type of adventure.

How can I help with a gear donation?
World Ride trips help to support the growth of women's mountain biking in Botswana. For these trips, we can accept some gear donations (they will have to be transported across the country to where our ladies ride). Donations that you can bring to Guatemala to leave with the ladies is very much appreciated! Things that are needed include: bikes (getting a new one? Travel with your bike and then leave it there!), helmets, pedals, shoes, tires, gloves, and/or hydration packs.
-
Should I tip my guide?
Gratuity is included in your trip but leaving extra can make a big difference for your guide and driver. We recommend 150-200 quetzales per guest per day. These get split between your guide and driver. If you would like to tip more, your guide and driver will very much appreciate it!
-
Will I be able to use a credit card, or should I have cash?
Some places accept credit cards in Guatemala, but it is mostly a cash based culture. It is recommended to get Guatemala Quetzales currency from an ATM once you arrive in Antigua. You can also exchange US dollars at a foreign currency exchange.
-
Do you require or recommend travel insurance for this trip?
Travel insurance is recommended for your trip that includes medical. Typically bikes are not 100% covered by travel insurance policies. Many homeowners or renters policies do cover bikes while traveling abroad, so be sure to check into this before the trip. If you wish to get extra insurance for your bike, we recommend Velosurance. For standard trip insurance, if you do not wish to insure your bike or have bike coverage from another policy, we recommend World Nomads.
