Powder Mountian Skiing & Snowboarding Resort Guide
Powder Mountain is a totally unique skiing and snowboarding experience located just over an hour drive from Salt Lake City. With new expansions Powder Mountain, sometimes shortened to Pow Mow, is the largest ski and snowboard area in the United States at over 8,464 acres of skiable terrain.
Powder Mountain is unique not only because of it size, but for the way that the resort puts a cap to the number of skiers and snowboarders allowed on the mountain on any given day. By capping season pass sales and daily lift tickets, Powder Mountain has some of the least crowded slopes out there, allowing for fresh tracks days after a big snowstorm.

Powder Mountain has a unique layout, with two of its three main base areas actually sitting at the top of the mountain. Parking and a day lodge are available at each. The three base areas are the Powder Mountain Village, Sundown Lodge, and Hidden Valley.
Beginner terrain is available across the mountain, with some very long groomed runs for beginner skiers and snowboarders The longer runs can be found off of the Hidden Lake Express chairlift, which is accessible from all of the bases areas. The Sundown lift offers shorter groomed beginner runs for skiers and snowboarders that are just getting started.
Intermediates are well catered to at Powder Mountain with both groomed and off piste options. The new Mary’s and Village lifts access some of this terrain as well as the Hidden Lake Express chair. The intermediate terrain in Cobabe Canyon is a good challenge for strong intermediates.
Advanced skiers and snowboarders will love chasing fresh powder turns around Powder Mountain. The Paradise lift is just that, a powder hounds paradise. The various runs here have a great variety of trees and glades to choose from. Cobabe Canyon has more fun advanced terrain, as well as the Lightning Ridge where single cat rides can be purchased for cheap.
Skiers and snowboarders can drop into the Powder Country area for some of the steepest pitches at Powder Mountain and some great trees. These runs bottom out at the road; from the road there is a shuttle that runs back to the lifts.
Also available to skiers and snowboarders are the various Adventure Areas, accessed by snowcats and hiking. Tours and guiding access the Gertsen Canyon, Wolf Creek, and DMI area, which hold great terrain and deep powder. There are several packages available to skiers and snowboarders looking to get the most of these backcountry experiences at Powder Mountain.

This may seem way farther than heading up Little Cottonwood Canyon to Alta or Snowbird, however, most of the drive is on I-80 making it go by quickly. The Utah Transit Authority does run a bus from Ogden to Powder Mountain, which takes about 90 minutes, or two and a half hours from Salt Lake City.

Development of the Powder Mountain Village is part of the ski and snowboard area’s master plan. Huntsville, Eden, and Liberty are the closest towns with lodging.

Dining options at and around Powder Mountain are fairly limited. That’s okay though, because skiers and snowboarders will be so busy riding powder that they’ll forget how hungry they are. Where to Find Lift Tickets to Powder Mountain?
With expansive terrain and limits to the number of people allowed on the mountain each day, one would venture to guess that Powder Mountain would have expensive lift tickets. This is not true, however, Powder Mountain has some of the cheapest lift tickets in Utah. There is a limit to the number of tickets sold for each day, so buying lift tickets in advance online is highly recommended. Children and seniors are eligible for discount Powder Mountain lift tickets, too.

Powder Mountain is not misnamed; it snows a lot. Over 500” of snowfall on average every winter. That is over 41 feet of powder. This means that there are lots of powder days throughout the year. The lack of crowds also mean that fresh snow lasts much longer after a storm. Other ski areas in Utah like Snowbird and Park City may receive more press than Powder Mountain, however, the quantity of snow, and absence of crowds make Pow Mow a can’t miss on a ski and snowboard vacation to Utah. The cat skiing is perfect for those looking to add another special day to a Utah vacation. The giant selection of inbounds terrain and cheap lift tickets also make Powder Mountain a great option for budget conscious skiers and snowboarders as well.
