The biggest name in backcountry airbags has some hot new tech for this season. The BCA Float E2 25 Airbag Pack is the latest and greatest in the line of Float 25 packs, with an all-new E2 engine. The E2 engine is powered by a supercapacitor, which despite sounding like it was ripped straight from the script of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, is actually a real thing. A supercapacitor basically is a really awesome battery. It performs better in cold temps, releases energy faster, and is much lighter and smaller than traditional rechargeable batteries. All of which, of course is perfect for something you need to lug uphill in the cold with the hopes of never using, while requiring perfect, instantaneous response when you need it. Other than the new supercapacitor, the Float E2 25 remains a perfectly kitted backcountry pack, full of all the features you need for quick hitter missions and side country laps.

Alpride E2 Supercapacitor Engine – BCA’s new Float E2 avalanche airbag packs use an Alpride E2 supercapacitor system to store energy that powers the compressor upon deployment. Supercapacitors store and release energy based on electromechanical properties rather than a chemical reaction like in rechargeable batteries. This makes supercapacitor performance much more reliable in cold temperatures. For the same reason, the energy stored in a supercapacitor releases faster when activated for deployment. The new E2 engine is 40 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than the existing Alpride E1 system, with a 162-liter airbag. Like the E1, the E2 is TSA-approved for hassle-free airline travel.

Warning – Wearing an airbag backpack is no guarantee of survival in an avalanche. Backcountry travelers are highly advised to educate themselves in snow stability assessment, route finding, and companion rescue and carry all of the conventional avalanche gear in addition to the airbag.
AA Batteries for Additional Deployments – In addition to the rechargeable supercapacitor storage, you can install two AA batteries to allow for additional deployments in the field. The batteries also help keep the supercapacitors at full charge when not in use.
