Please arrive in Whistler the day before we depart. Whistler is an hour and a half, or more depending on traffic, north of Vancouver so be sure to factor this into your plans if you’re arriving in Vancouver.
  • 1
    Day number 1
Meet your guide and group in front of our Whistler hotel at 9:00am this morning, ready to ride. Then it’s a full day on Whistler’s incredible network of all-mountain trails. We’ll ride about 15 miles today and a swim in one of Whistler’s lakes is definitely planned for the afternoon. Tonight we stay at our hotel in Whistler Village.
  • 2
    Day number 2
This morning we’ll drive 40 minutes down the highway to Squamish, dubbed the outdoor recreation capital of Canada, a singletrack paradise that’s achieved cult status among mountain bikers. You can expect some super fun challenges today, some technical ups and downs about 10 miles roundtrip and 2,400 feet of climbing.
  • 3
    Day number 3
This morning we transfer 20 minutes north to the riding mecca of Pemberton that’s dryer and more open than Whistler and home to some of the sweetest undiscovered trails in the region. After lunch, we head up and over the Hurley Pass to our log cabin on the shores of Tyaughton Lake. Today is our biggest day of climbing about 3300 ft of ascent and of course descent! We spend the night at our private log cabin and enjoy a great meal tonight.
  • 4
    Day number 4
This morning we fly from Tyaughton Lake to the remote teal-blue Lorna Lake surrounded by snowy peaks and glaciers. Then it’s a pedal on historic singletrack over vast expanses of rocky alpine terrain and remote mountain passes. We pass through meadows rich with wildflowers and wildlife, to Bear Paw camp, set deep in the heart of the mountains. Originally a hunting and exploration camp, Bear Paw has been restored with five outfitted canvas tents, a main cabin for dinning, hot showers and more.
  • 5
    Day number 5
Wake up this morning in a wilderness paradise. We have riding options today depending on the group’s desires, the easiest being a 25-mile rolling descent (some small ups). Overnight at a private log cabin.

Trip Planning

Trip Planning

We will be visiting several distinctly different climatic zones on this BC mountain bike tour, from rainforest to high mountains. In big mountains, weather can change quickly and drastically - it could be 85 degrees one day and then nearly freezing on a mountain top the next day. This region can also receive considerable rain so be prepared. Generally though, the weather during the summer is hot and sunny.

The perfect bike for this trip is a 5-6” travel all-mountain dual suspension bike with hydraulic disk brakes. All participants are required to have their bikes in excellent working order before the trip begins. Also required: helmet, hydration pack, eye protection and clothing for all types of weather. Kneepads are strongly recommended for bigger descents. All participants are required to bring extra brake pads, tubes, a patch kit, and any other parts specific to your bike. Big Mountain will send you a detailed list of required equipment and clothing before departure.

FAQ
FAQ
  • Are departures Guaranteed?
All trips must reach a minimum of 4 guests in order to run. July and August departures are available upon request. Please check with evo or Big Mountain before purchasing flights.
  • How fit do I need to be?
This trip is rated as a fitness level 2. Please fill out Big Mountains rider questionnaire to help choose if this trip is right for you. We recommend that to get the most out of this trip, you; exercise 2-3 times a week for 30 minutes or more, are comfortable with sustained output at athletic pace with occasional anaerobic periods, can ride 4-6 hours per day for 2-4 consecutive days and are comfortable pushing and hiking with the bike for sections. Inevitably there will be slower and faster riders in each group but, from experience the differences in ability work themselves out: some will simply enjoy the view for a little longer. If needed, riders can elect to skip a day's riding or a portion of it depending on logistics. You will get more enjoyment out of any trip if you are in good physical condition.
  • What is the food like? What if I have special diets requests?
The meals provided are typical of the region. Typically, all breakfasts and some dinners are included whereas lunches will only not be included if there is no opportunity to stop along the way. Big Mountain makes sure that everyone eats well, guaranteed. When you register for this trip you will be asked about specific dietary needs or preferences. Accommodations can be made for most unique dietary requests such as; vegan, vegetarian, allergies, gluten free, etc.
  • How technical are the trails and what skill level of riding is required?
The trails on this trip can range from flat open roads to steeper rooty and rocky singletrack. We will also cross some man made wooden platforms and structures as well. We start each trip with a comprehensive riding skills session on less technical trails and progress from there. Big Mountain rates the technicality of this trip at 2. This generally requires that you have been mountain biking consistently for two plus years, can climb and descend under control on moderately steep singletrack with loose rocks and some roots. Can ride with mild exposure at times. You know when to walk a section that might be too difficult. Would embrace more riding time and consider taking a lesson or enrolling in a camp to help prepare for the trip.
  • What kind of bike do I need?
The perfect bike for this trip is a 5-6” travel all-mountain dual suspension bike with hydraulic disk brakes. All participants are required to have their bikes in excellent working order before the trip begins. Also required: helmet, hydration pack, eye protection and clothing for all types of weather. Kneepads are strongly recommended for bigger descents. All participants are required to bring extra brake pads, tubes, a patch kit, and any other parts specific to your bike. Big Mountain will send you a detailed list of required equipment and clothing before departure.
  • Should I be worried about theft or the handling of my bike and gear?
Clients are responsible for the care and prevention of theft of their bikes and gear. Guides will aid in bike load and unload to racks and vehicles during the trip – it is the clients responsibility to approve methods of loading and also storage. If ever in doubt, we encourage everyone to talk to their guide or host and, if needed, agree on an alternative or ask to store your bike in your room. On all our trips we recommend bringing a durable lock for added security (even in your hotel room). Big Mountain Bike Adventures, staff and partners are not responsible for lost or stolen bikes, bags or personal items.
  • What kind of accommodation can I expect?
In Whistler we stay in a three-star hotel in the heart of Whistler Village. In the South Chilcotins we will spend one night in a restored remote hunting camp in the mountains and two nights in our private lakeside lodge. Where available, a single supplement fee is required for those who ask for single accommodation.
  • What is the group size?
Groups are typically between 4 and 12 participants, with 1-2 guides per group. Often, a third guide will provide extra support during the trip. Our groups are kept small so that we can ensure every participant is well looked after. Small groups mean riders can give each other space, yet be sure that everyone is on the right track.
  • How old do you have to be to join this trip?
Participants must be 18 and over, unless accompanied by an adult.
  • Do I need trip insurance?
Health insurance is required and we highly recommend World Nomads for travel insurance. Please see Big Mountain’s Terms & Conditions page for more info.
  • What If I need to cancel?
If canceling, the following policy applies for scheduled trips: - Within 14 days of receiving your registration (and outside of the 90 day pre-trip window) you will be fully refunded. - At 90 days before the trip start date, 50% may be refunded up to 60 days prior, 25% refunded up to 30 days prior. - All trips are non-refundable 29 days or less prior to the trips start date.

The past few days have surpassed my expectations. [Big Mountain] did a stellar job of leading the group around some of the coolest terrain any of us have seen. Most importantly, [they] did it with style and grace and always the utmost of professionalism. This has truly been an experience of a lifetime.
